Part 3. Anthony
“I obey myself knowing my own mind.
But one cannot speak of it.” (Bacchylides)
August 9. San-Monte. The Bunch of Blue GrapesNext morning, after he had his morning meal, washed and did some other small things, Anthony went to his boy’s bedroom--to do it he only crossed the drawing-room.
Kissing the boy on lips, he looked at him up and down and demanded in a low ingratiating voice: “How are you?”
“Fine!” The reply quite corresponded to the boy’s fresh and content look.
“Wonderful. Today, my dear, we shall have our lunch at the sea.”
Jocelyn’s eyes lit up. “That’s great!”
“Just so. En route we’ll look in the restaurant to provide ourselves with food and then be ready. Change, dear!”
Jocelyn nodded. Anthony went to the wardrobe. The boy would be wearing today a white t-shirt, gray shorts with pockets on hips and a white cap.
In the restaurant they took the plastic basket with the food that Anthony ordered this morning. Their lunch would consist of two pizzas with champignons, a vacuum flask of cold café au lait, one liter of milk and a bunch of bananas. These humble eatables should help Anthony to while away the time till dinner.
Jocelyn carried the basket. Anthony carried the bag. The Philadelphia Hotel--where Americans stayed mostly--was 1/5 mile from the plage, so they went on foot.
The nice cutter, white with a black strip on its sides, was waiting for them at the quay. On board Jocelyn brought the basket down to the cabin, and Anthony checked up the readiness of the cutter for departure. The cutter was ready--Anthony sat down on the driver’s seat and started a motor.
The sea of the Providence Bay was calm this morning, the forecast was good, so Anthony directed his cutter far from the shore. Jocelyn was sitting beside him. A fresh wind poured Jocelyn’s face with cool spindrift. He was happy.
Not to risk Anthony was not about to leave the bay; after the next round about the bay he stopped the cutter in sight of the shore. The place was free from close neighborhood of other cutters--however, if by chance some restless neighborhood appeared near by in the future then he would change the place--he switched the motor off and stood up to cast anchor. Like an enormous white float the cutter swung on the deep-blue waves. Anthony was neither an experienced seaman nor a skilled cutter-driver, therefore, if only the sea was rough at least slightly today then he would not resolve to leave the shore. Yet this instant, when the weather was fine, he trusted in his own skill. “Let’s go down! We must change.”
