The story is told in the present day, through the disillusioned eyes of Renee, a young Swedish woman, who has just been made into a vampire.
She tells the story of how, over two thousand years ago, Demetrios, an Ancient Greek vampire, meets and falls in love with Aurelia, a young Roman woman. Demetrios makes Aurelia into a vampire; but, hundreds of years later, they are later separated during the Sulla riots.
Renee also tells us about Suz, a social misfit in1960s Britain, who has baffling energy-drawing and psychic powers. By chance, Suz meets with Marlowe at his Moribund Club, the place where others with similar abilities secretly congregate; and she later meets with Aurelia. Aurelia and Suz become unlikely companions and Suz assists Aurelia in finding Demetrios.
Meanwhile, Demetrios is in love with his current lover. Throughout the years, he has abandoned many others, including Aurelia, and does not wish to be reunited with any of them.
Demetrios is beheaded by vampire hunters and his guilt-ridden ghost appears to Renee, then a lonely medium with a lifelong obsession for vampires.
Suz persuades Aurelia to make her into a vampire; and Aurelia comes to regret her decision, as Suz initially runs amok on a killing spree. Following a close-shave with vampire hunters, Suz returns to Aurelia, and even finds them a necessary human assistant - but the clumsy alcoholic is often more hindrance than help!
The vampire hunters gradually slay Demetrios’ lovers, one by one, but Aurelia survives, saved by Marlowe and his friends from The Moribund Club.
Aurelia’s contact in the Vatican seemingly emerges as the betrayer, but ultimately, vengeful Aurelia is revealed as the culprit. Via a séance she communicates with Demetrios and his spirit leaves, finally at peace.
